Can You Defend Yourself?

Defenders of the Faith-Apply Apologetics!           By Kelly Durant 3-18-12
On trial in the Methodist board in England, they were trying to persecute William Booth to stop his evangelistic activity which would bring the poor in the church. He was hearing the authority and then it came his turn to speak. He was silent a moment, and then Catherine stood up in the back and shouted, “Don’t you shilly shally!” Meaning, don’t procrastinate, to be so slow to answer! He must have been embarrassed! But the Booths influence is still with us today because they were a team defending the right!
Have you ever been slow to respond when unjust people are imposing their values on you? Probably most all of us have at some time or another. We must prepare. We must know their arguments and then be ready to respond. 1 Peter 3:15 But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:
All your life as a Christian you will be challenged, made fun of, and provoked by those who have everything in their minds mixed up, these are the people with their minds fashioned by the corrupt worldviews of the day or false doctrines. These people are always confused and the author of confusion is Satan and we must answer him back when he uses people around us! To defend the faith implies we need…
Apologetics: Apologetics (from Greek ἀπολογία, "speaking in defense") is the discipline of defending a position (often religious) through the systematic use of information. It is not an apology as some minds might deduct it is a polemic stance with intelligent defense! How intellectually prepared are you to defend Christ? To defend you must be opinionated; you have a right to believe what you choose! Never let another person intimidate you that you must accept heresy!
Focus: Tertullian (c. 160 – c. 225} was a notable early Christian apologist and a polemicist against heresy. Tertullian is called "the father of Latin Christianity"[3] and "the founder of Western theology."[4] Though conservative, he did originate and advance new theology to the early Church. He is perhaps most famous for being the oldest extant Latin writer to use the term Trinity (Latin trinitas),[5] and giving the oldest extant formal exposition of a Trinitarian theology.
The theology of God the Father, God the Son, and God the holy Spirit as being equal in power still stands today due to him, which formulated the Nicene Creed, or Apostles Creed which was written in the 4th century.  The opposing view of the Arians, that God is superior and that Christ really is nothing, being inferior, provoked a war for centuries and thousands died defending the stance of the truth of the Trinity! Even today, the Unitarians, Jehovah’s Witness and other sects still support the rejected for centuries Arian view! It is called Arian because it is from the teachings of Arius ( AD 250–336), an Egyptian who taught the primitive church his misguided doctrine. And how much conviction do you have?
To take an example of apologetics on the trinity look with me at: Doctrine 3 of the Salvation Army says what? We believe that there are three persons in the Godhead - the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost - undivided in essence and co-equal in power and glory.
In the history of the Christian church, Tertullian, was used by God to persuade the Romans to respect the Christian worldview as valid. Among his apologetic writings, the Apologeticus, addressed to the Roman magistrates, is a most pungent defense of Christianity and the Christians against the reproaches of the pagans, and an important legacy of the ancient Church, proclaiming the principle of freedom of religion as an inalienable human right and he demanded a fair trial for Christians before they are condemned to death.
In other words, we have the freedom to read about Tertullian today instead of some pagan Romulus and Remus because he was a hero and a bold Christian who fought for the rights of those of the true Christian faith. He approached the authorities with the risk of getting himself killed! So he was polemic and opinionated, politically involved in defense of Christ, and intelligent in his arguments. He was a model for all of us!
Christian conservative stances in todays’ world that are reported upon more and more as stupid and antiquated as the propaganda news channels repeat to everyone subliminally and overtly that no one intelligent would ever be biased or express religious convictions. For decades now Satan has been at work in all the media outlets to discredit Christians like you and me. It is time to fight back with intelligence and persuasiveness.
What a lie people have swallowed that no one must ever mix politics and religion! The politicians impose their immorality and escape the even the law. They say, keep your morals, religions, and opinion to yourself! How shameful they want to make you look if you offer intellectual discourse going against the grain of the corrupt society exposing that it is their debauchery that is bankrupting the nation!
We are living in times as it was in Isa. day, Isaiah 5:20
Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!
The world is going to hell before our eyes so we must improve in our apologetics! It is our fight, this one against evil in the world, defending the thing most dear to us, our loving savior Jesus Christ! The one who frees us from the slavery of sin!
A true gardener does not just love the flowers, he also hates the weeds that would kill the flowers! The same it must be with Christians, we must combat the popularization and acceptance of evil systems that destroy each person’s salvation, hope, and health!  Actually, there are quite a few Christian groups in the world that protest against sins and the heretical blasphemers of the Holy Scriptures but notice how they are ignored, attacked, and mocked by the news!
But the blood of the martyrs is the seed of the church! Rome couldn’t wipe out the Christians by mass extinction in the Coliseum! No nation can stop Christians, not even the Communists, where 26 million were killed under Mao Tse Tung, and 10 million under Stalin, and who knows how many under Castro and others! But we are responsible for not letting the truth of the Holy Scriptures disappear!
What we as a church must focus on is the spreading of our faith, which includes right living or holiness, as this was the fight of our movement’s founding fathers. Our apologetics come to light as we vocalize to others how we combat sin, poverty, and addictions. The Salvation Army is most effective in these areas.
Each church movement has its niche in the world, Our niche is evangelism as a means to overcome deep seated sin to bring each one into light and holiness! There are multi-millions we have educated in God’s word to become clean useful citizens for the rest of their time on earth and they will continue on in holiness eternally in God’s Kingdom! Satan would love to stop us!
If you want to know how to strengthen your faith in apologetics, start digging through the historical books of church history. Start asking yourself, “why, do I believe what I do”?
Today I took the tried and proven Trinity doctrine as a practice run. But now let’s play the devil’s advocate a minute and ask some hard questions. A Muslim would confront you on this belief that you are worshipping not just one God but 3 gods and therefore you are a pagan being polytheistic and a heretic must die! What are you going to answer to that? (pause)
To answer you might have to do a personal Bible study to discover that the Son, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit, have been with God ever since the beginning. Many verses in the O.T confirm this, such as the Holy, Holy, Holy salute to God, but in the end 3 being one in equality is in the essence of the N.T. and justifiability considered a mystery. Ephesians 3:9
And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ.
It is sort of like the egg, with the shell, the white, and the yolk, all three make up the egg, but we just accept Jesus words who commanded us to Matt 28: 19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: (in other words these three are required and are therefore equal in authority, being though different in their manifestations)
A Jehovah witness would tell you that you have the Trinity all misunderstood. That the Father is dominant, so the son just had to obey Him and therefore the son is just a man so you must pray only to Jehova. Say what?! By this they strip Jesus of His redemptive importance insulting to God!  John 16:26 At that day ye shall ask in my name: and I say not unto you, that I will pray the Father for you:
So Jesus makes it clear everyone must now get to the Father through Him only!
Heretics arguing from ignorance, or from Satan’s logic, contradict basic doctrines or conservative principles that have been debated and resolved by the most intelligent Bible scholars of all time for centuries and centuries.
You have to conclude that argumentative people, people who will not accept that intelligent anointed by God men must be right in their teachings, are just honestly mentally challenged and have a reduced capacity to reason and apply abstract logic, or they are full of pride wanting to show off, or they just love to divide and take away the peace from others! With misinformed people we will show some tolerance, but with prideful people causing division we must expose it for what it is, and reject those who promote heretical stances contradicting God, from satan himself.
Proverbs 26:12  Seest thou a man wise in his own conceit? there is more hope of a fool than of him .
Everyone has an idea of right and wrong, but please Christians, defend the faith when you know there is a verbal or unjust attack happening. Start doing your research in your Bible, in the library, or on the internet as to why you defend the truth of what is right!
The challenge I give you today is to be bold and courageous because as the word says    2 Timothy 3:13But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived.     2 Timothy 2:15Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. Are preparing yourself to fight the good fight of faith? Ask Jesus for wisdom, and ask Him for a passion to defend the right things of God, His truth!

Evangelism? What Stops You!

Obeying Evangelism? Your Sins Are Preventing It!  3-2012 Kelly Durant
Matt 13: 3-12
3And he spake many things unto them in parables, saying, Behold, a sower went forth to sow; 4And when he sowed, some seeds fell by the way side, and the fowls came and devoured them up: 5Some fell upon stony places, where they had not much earth: and forthwith they sprung up, because they had no deepness of earth: 6And when the sun was up, they were scorched; and because they had no root, they withered away. 7And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprung up, and choked them: 8But other fell into good ground, and brought forth fruit, some an hundredfold, some sixtyfold, some thirtyfold. 9Who hath ears to hear, let him hear. 10And the disciples came, and said unto him, Why speakest thou unto them in parables?11 He answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given.12For whosoever hath, to him shall be given, and he shall have more abundance: but whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken away even that he hath.
How many of you have had the experience of having a new baby? Maybe, if not yours, you have been near someone who has had one.
It is a happiness like no other, right! Your energies are all focused on every little smile, every little need, and every move they make!  They are your life!

When you tell others about Jesus and someone converts it is like having a new baby in your responsibility! You feel an ecstasy, a high, like you are on drugs for the joy of seeing a person convert to have Jesus as their savior knowing they will now have a new start in life, have eternal life! And over time, the hope is they too will give birth even more souls for God’s kingdom as well!

Evangelizing can be one of the most rewarding things you can do in this life because God makes you feel the energy and joy of His Holy Spirit working in you as you guide this new soul into the new world of the wisdom & light of the Word!

So why do some Christians obey this command to evangelize (it is not an option) and others just ignore it?

Evangelism is a dangerous fight!  Jesus came to usurp Satan’s systems to establish the Kingdom of God! He taught us how to copy Him and to liberate and save with the great commission, Mark16:15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.
This command was in front of everyone before He ascends into heaven, it was for all followers (me & you), not just the disciples! To not share eternal salvation is the epitome of selfishness!

There are many reasons and excuses people give as to why they believe they should not have to do this commandment and evangelize. People think, after all, that is what the preacher or the church leader is for, to evangelize, right? But me, I am not qualified! That excuse with Jesus will not work! There are many reasons people give as excuses. To start with, at least the sewer was out doing his job.

In the parable of the sewer, recall how some seed fell on the ground and were eaten by the birds, others on stony ground, some amongst thorns, but some gave good fruit. This implies a lot of sewing for just a meniscal results! That’s why people get discouraged from evangelizing! But worse, here is what is preventing.

Pride: It keeps you from telling others about Jesus! People feel embarrassed that their friends will make fun of them if they share the gospel. So how do you & I take the conviction to overcome pride?… Mark 8:38
Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.
Imagine there are people here amongst us, or who were here, that when they face Jesus in the end, He will be ashamed of them. How horrible face the ruler of the universe, Jesus, and to have been ashamed of Him!

In some cultures, like with the Asians, being shamed by the authority is so terrible you are practically expected to kill yourself! You are worthless to them and everyone around you sees it and you are reduced to nothing.  Eternal shame would be horrible! Ask the Lord, is pride preventing me from speaking up about you, Lord causing me to condemn my soul for a lack of obedience?

Laziness: How embarrassing to not obey! This is a terrible sin of allowing carnality to dominate the spirit. Consider how God will forgive you for not being willing to go but you do, but He won’t forgive you for not going at all!  Matt 21: 28But what think ye? A certain man had two sons; and he came to the first, and said, Son, go work to day in my vineyard. 29He answered and said, I will not: but afterward he repented, and went.30And he came to the second, and said likewise. And he answered and said, I go, sir: and went not.31Whether of them twain did the will of his father? They say unto him, The first. Jesus saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, That the publicans and the harlots go into the kingdom of God before you.

Imagine, God is more ready to accept into heaven the people who were really bad like drunks and prostitutes that repented and started telling their testimony about how Jesus changed them than He is the people who, like the Pharisees, went to church and appeared good, but they did not obey! You can’t think, oh I will go evangelize one day; but the harvest is today, not tomorrow! Ask yourself, am I lazy to proclaim Jesus to others around me allow others to remain lost?

Discouragement: Some conclude, with little results, why evangelize!
Let’s go back to the example of the baby that grows up?  What happens in real life with children? They grow up and some make you proud while others who have amazing potential disappoint you! Some children never care for their own parents!

Each of us react differently to those who fail us and God, some of us get bitter quicker than others and conclude that people are just not worth my time and energy since they don’t always turn out like they should. Sadly some people conclude that those under their care are not worth the time and effort for the investment! It is true, dealing with people has both its rewards and frustrations!

Peter got discouraged how much more us then? But Jesus encouraged always! Jn 21:16 He saith to him again the second time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my sheep.

We must focusing on the one seed that took root and know it is worth every minute of it. I keep investing! Yet if you focus on the failures, on the lost seed, and think, I wasted so much time on this and look how unthankful, disobedient, unloving and back-stabbing this investment was, you will burn out! Many pastors burn out and quit! We are all always tempted to just want to give it up!

Ask you self, am I self-focused or too discouraged to invest in others?  Do I in error expect everything to always turn out good? Am I willing to keep on going with just a few  good ones and let God sort out the rest? One in four seeds?!

When we as Christians practice evangelism, it is very real like the sewer.  In Matt 13:3-8   there are 4 seeds and only one turned out to be the amazing one in four to give fruit! What we could conclude is, this is a crazy investment! I get little reward back for all the effort, I get waste and unthankfulness! Only 25% good if that much! But the rewards are in heaven!

You have to pray against your human nature to have a divine driven persistence, like the love of a parent who loves every child, even his wayward son, and be inspired & convicted by the love of Jesus to keep on telling others about Jesus! Otherwise, you will fail Jesus in this life!

It cost Jesus his life to bring salvation to you, and it should cost you something to bring salvation to others! It will cost you your time, prayers, emotions, and some material goods, but you are investing in eternity, a saved soul that will live forever!

I have seen people throughout the years have 2 or 3 bad experiences from their evangelism, some resistance, ridicule, and mockery from their families or friends, and they just give up to never evangelize again to anyone!

Let me tell you my experience. When I was 21 and I told all my family I was going to evangelize and be a missionary, only a few understood and most stopped talking to me!  Others did not want to come to Jesus and repent as I had.

Talking about Jesus makes many people uncomfortable because His love & light remind them of their sins and dirtiness! I basically lost most all of my friends & family but did I care? Yes, it did hurt but I focused on the Word and on Jesus mission in my life. God gave me strength and a new family with new brothers in Christ!

Matthew 19:29
And every one that hath forsaken houses, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my name's sake, shall receive an hundredfold, and shall inherit everlasting life.

When I lost my old friends, that really weren’t worth it anyway, I gained new Christian brothers to support me. I knew they had a real love for God and a love for me and ever since then I have always considered all true Christians to be my true family. And I have doubts about some of my flesh family, but it is my family in Jesus that will last forever with me in heaven! I still have friends in Jesus from 35 years ago!

In this promise in Matt 19:29, I must admit it really is true! I have stayed in the homes of hundreds of people I had just met in my lifetime and I have had people live in my home as well. I had grown so close to some that I considered them to be as a real brother or sister to me.

Imagine, my family, and yours includes millions of people and we only get to know a few hundred in my lifetime!

I dream of heaven where I will be able to sit down and hear all the stories of who first told them about Jesus and hear of all acts of love done by all my brothers and sisters throughout time! Imagine the great defenders of the faith, Joan of Arc, or Martin Luther, all of the past great ones will share their stories with me and you, and with the other millions in heaven for eternity!
But what stories of sharing your faith and converted souls will you have to tell?

So sharing Jesus with others is an activity that causes us to experience new life, but it is also an activity in which we will experience frustration and futileness. You have to be tough and with Jesus in you, you are more tough than any demon, and we overcome any evil we encounter! Especially the demons of discouragement, pride, laziness, and selfishness.

Don’t lose sight of the last line of verse 12 For whosoever hath, to him shall be given, and he shall have more abundance: but whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken away even that he hath. In other words, those that have won others to Jesus will enjoy the fruits of everyone’s labors, but those who did little to nothing to sew the seeds will get even the little bit they had taken away!

How would you prefer to have it? Pray to start sewing the seeds of Jesus today!

Are You Great, or just Ordinary?

Are You Great, or just Ordinary?  by Kelly Durant 3-1012
John 3:30 He must increase, but I must decrease.

Great men are those who forgot themselves and they lift everyone else to be great!
Here in John 3 we see that John the Baptist was the most influential man of His time. He was truly great, but when He knew Jesus had started his ministry, he said, He must increase but I must decrease!

Let’s look at John as a humble preacher with a little church with only a few disciples, but what made John great above all the wealth and numbers of the churches of the Jews of his day? He was a humble man that lived a sincere holy life and everyone respected his authority.

He was really the only one that mattered as the people saw he was the only hope for them to learn how to be clean of their sins; he taught to repent by doing a symbolic ritual but this Baptism served the purpose to impress that anyone could have a new start with God, God is always ready to make you clean and new and someone great!

Today we will continue learning how to change but you have to be willing to change how you think and how you treat others. I want everyone here to be great, and not just ordinary!

But the first lesson here that John shows us is that in order to ever be somebody, we have to be willing to become nobody just as John shows. In the Christian faith and in the Salvation Army we must learn to humble ourselves and let Jesus work in us, let Jesus increase I our life and we must suppress our own selves, we must decrease!

(19)Mark Twain, the famous writer , said to Keep away from people who try to belittle you, Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you too can become great! That is my role, and it is the same role as Jesus’ to help you to be great, to be someone extraordinary.
The first lesson of greatness is surrender, you allow Jesus to be great through you and that is by your humility.

The next lesson is that great men are servants. In the Word we find
Gal 5:13-14  …but by love serve one another.
14 For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

Reflect on these quotes:
- The measure of a man’s greatness is not in how many servants he has, but in how many people he serves.
- There are no great men except those that have rendered service to mankind.
-  Most great men and women are not perfectly rounded in their personalities, but are instead people whose one driving enthusiasm is so great it makes their faults seem insignificant.

If you want to know about a great servants I wish you could read the history of the founders of the Salvation Army, William and & Catherine Booth.
They were people that forgot so much about their selves in service to others that they made History! And we are still making history!

You cannot be a person who says, I will make myself great. It doesn’t work that way. The great people make others great! The Salvation Army only had been in existence for a little over 30 years or so when William Booth died in London in 1912, but his greatness made history. When he died that day became like a national holiday because all the traffic in London had to stop because close to a million people went to his funeral!

He always claimed that His passion was to win souls for Jesus Christ but what made the difference? We can compare Him to John the Baptist, he was just a poor man with a poor little group that were nobodies the difference was in the great way he served others. He would take a soul, a vagabond, an alcoholic from off the streets, a person that every body, even the person them selves, had given up on, and he would clean them up physically, feed them and then clean their spirits with the Word of God and put a uniform on them and give them a reason to live! Our reason to live is to win souls!

William Booth was like a John the Baptist in his day because the big wealthy churches of England in the late 1800’s were not reaching the humble and the lost just as the religious leaders were ineffective in Jesus day.

They were making everyone feel small so they could make their selves appear great. They had the opposite plan of God. God’s plan is to lift up the weak and humble and put down the exalted. Beware of churches that seek to intimidate you and show off their own so called greatness.
Luke 14:11
11 For whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.
Jesus expressed that our greatness is displayed in our service but we serve Jesus not because we are His servants, like slaves, but we serve Him and others because He is our friend.
 John 15:15-16
15 Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.
16 Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.

Those that are great in God’s eyes are those that serve Him and the humanity He created in a way that He has prepared them for.
Winston Churchill, the Prime Minister of England during WWII inspired his people to never give up in the fight to resist their evil Nazi enemy, and despite getting their city bombed to death by the Germans they were great and fought. We are in a spiritual war against evil just as in a world war. He said that,  “The price of greatness is responsibility.”

I want the Soldiers and members of the  Corps to be great people! I know we will be great only when each one of us puts our focus, not on ourselves, but on Jesus! He must increase but we must decrease!

It was the Lord who exalted William Booth to be a great man that everyone loved and honored and it is the Lord that will exalt you if you let Him change you!

Change implies becoming more humble, more like Jesus, becoming more a servant to others and winning souls to the Lord. How many of you have ever asked the Lord to make you humble?

How many have ever prayed, Lord make me a servant, make me a soul winner for you? Have you prayed make me nothing Lord so you can be everything in me?
