Celebrate With Me: 150 Years of the Salvation Army!

Celebrate With Me: 150 Years of the Salvation Army!
By Capt. Kelly Durant      6-29-15 for July 2, 2015

Matthew 4:19 And he said unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.

2. One time William Booth, the founder, said, “Some of our best men are women!” (Be careful how you interpret that as his intentions were simply to honor those who serve well) Can you believe this July, 2015, we are celebrating 150 years of our existence? In 130 countries our fellow Soldiers, Officers, and volunteers have saved, served, and influenced thousands of millions! What a privilege to belong to this movement that created a revolution by its good practices, outreach, and holiness gospel preaching. Here is a brief history taken from the website: http://salvationarmyusa.org/usn/history-of-the-salvation-army

‘William Booth embarked upon his ministerial career in 1852, desiring to win the lost multitudes of England to Christ. He walked the streets of London to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ to the poor, the homeless, the hungry, and the destitute.

Booth abandoned the conventional concept of a church and a pulpit, instead taking his message to the people. His fervor led to disagreement with church leaders in London, who preferred traditional methods. As a result, he withdrew from the church and traveled throughout England, conducting evangelistic meetings. His wife, Catherine, could accurately be called a cofounder of The Salvation Army.

In 1865, William Booth was invited to hold a series of evangelistic meetings in the East End of London. He set up a tent in a Quaker graveyard, and his services became an instant success. This proved to be the end of his wanderings as an independent traveling evangelist. (The SA officially began) His renown as a religious leader spread throughout London, and he attracted followers who were dedicated to fight for the souls of men and women.

Thieves, prostitutes, gamblers, and drunkards were among Booth's first converts to Christianity. To congregations who were desperately poor, he preached hope and salvation. His aim was to lead people to Christ and link them to a church for further spiritual guidance.’ (read full version at website)

3. As most of you know William Booth’s wife, Catherine Booth, was considered an even a better preacher than him! What many do not know is she died fairly young of breast cancer on Oct 4, 1890. She never got to see how worldwide the movement expanded to!  Imagine, William Booth lived 22 years longer being promoted to glory in London 1912. His funeral was honored by all of London! In those days they, and all the newly ordained Officers, would preach several sermons on the street corners daily. This open air outreach is what brought multitudes by the hundreds daily to join the ranks! It must have been exciting to see people coming leaving everything behind for Jesus!

There were serious homelessness problems back then that The Salvation Army decided to do something about and this is what prompted the opening of homeless shelters worldwide. In the beginnings in London there was a group of volunteers called the ‘Slum Sisters’ who would go into the extremely poverty stricken neighborhoods to minister to the people taking the risk of getting diseases such as tuberculosis. The Salvation Army from the beginning has always helped the poor, reformed the alcoholic, helped people creating work, and restart new lives with faith.

Many social programs were started by the Salvation Army and this example of a serving faith in action shamed the other prominent churches and incited their criticism at that time. Today however, most churches have recognized our fruits and many as well adopted a ‘social gospel’ which models what Jesus commanded in Matthew 25:35 “For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: 36 Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me.”

4. The early Salvation Army practices even included the relocation of people to farm communities. William Booth’s social gospel was spelled out at length in his best-selling book that he wrote 1890, ‘In Darkest England and The Way Out’ I have read most of it and he was quite a visionary! I recommend you read it but take into account the book is a bit complicated due to the change of English word meanings overtime. How amazing it was because it impacted multitudes with a new vision of how to bring more heaven on the earth when then times were (as today) dark, depressing, oppressive, contaminated from industry soot, and drunks and prostitutes were a dime a dozen.

So many hundreds of people joined the Salvation Army daily in those days that many decided to travel to other countries to begin new outposts abroad. The Salvation Army in the U.S.A. began  on March 10, 1880, with Commissioner George Scott Railton and seven women officers, who had their first ‘open air’ meeting kneeling on the dockside at Battery Park in New York City. Imagine, today the Salvation Army is capable of serving people in every single county in this huge country! The Salvation Army has more than 500,000 members between officers, employees, and volunteers in the United States alone. The organization serves more than 30 million people in the U.S. yearly. Some people may shun the work because it is Christian, but no one denies it is rated as “the most effective non-profit” in the U.S.

How is it possible to have so many volunteers and members? It is all because of Jesus Christ! The Salvation Army’s mission statement is as follows: ‘The Salvation Army, an international movement, is an evangelical part of the universal Christian Church. Its message is based on the Bible. Its ministry is motivated by the love of God. Its mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination.’ I love this to the point mission statement, how about you?

5. All of what I just shared is the amazing fruit for being obedient to God. For the spiritual message of today I chose an old quote from William Booth that he shared about the mission in a special meeting in its beginnings. He said, "The Salvation Army is so simple.  It is just ‘Follow Jesus’.  Follow close, that you do not lose sight of Him.  Follow till you have formed a habit, and the Christ-like life is as natural as the self-life.  Following means having the spirit of Christ.  Men possessed of devils were men who dealt with themselves and each other in a devilish way.  A man possessed with the spirit of Christ deals with himself and others in a Christ-like way - he is a Christ-man." General Booth had a way of getting to the point while exalting Jesus, didn’t he?

This message coincides perfectly with the verse I choose today, Matthew 4:19 “And he said unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men”. Hasn’t this movement caught many souls for Jesus and helped them become useful followers with a new purpose in life? Doesn’t this Army invite everyone to follow Jesus? There are dozens and dozens of ways to follow and serve.

The problem with Christianity is that many churches throughout the centuries have had members that come and go to church but not many have stepped out into the community to become socially active “Doing something” to alleviate the pain and suffering. Booth asked one time, “What good is all this apparatus of church buildings if we are not winning souls for Christ?”

6. Let’s look at Booth’s quote of today in pieces to absorb its depth a bit better. “The Salvation Army is so simple. It is just ‘Follow Jesus’.”  Why does he start with Jesus? Jesus works!
Because Jesus is strong to deliver any suffering soul, only He is omnipotent.  He can free you and everyone from demonic bondage and enslavement to any sin.  Jesus is, as a popular praise song states, ‘mighty to save!’

Here is a quote from a blog by the Salvation Army which has reference to our history, ‘Armybarmy’.  I recommend you read up on all there is out there on our church. http://armybarmyblog.blogspot.com/2015_06_01_archive.html#3752157869167654529
“Follow close, that you do not lose sight of Him.”
So, we’re not following a set of teachings, a philosophy, an ideal.  We’re following closely a Person – Jesus.  And we’re exhorted to keep Him in close view.  And in light of how we read of His exploits, we’ve got to keep mobile, prepared to leave the comfortable and the familiar to stay close to Jesus. (Below is from Commissioner Ingrid Lindberg – ‘stay close to Jesus’).
“The Kingdom Of God Is At Hand.  It is at hand.  Reach out your hand.  There it is.  Let’s be living In the Kingdom of God – replete with its priorities and passion and power.”

The quote of Booth continues, “Follow ‘til you have formed a habit, and the Christ-like life is as natural as the self-life.”
Haven’t we read that you can nail a habit in a month of daily practice?  It seems it may take longer in spiritual matters.  But we have to be conscientious and diligent about our own development.  We have to form the good habit – so the Christ-life is as natural as our self-life.

7. “Following means having the spirit of Christ.” Following Jesus means that you have to have the spirit of Christ. (Next, a quote from a sermon of William Booth) ‘The Holy Ghost Is With Me’, “Is the Holy Spirit with you?  This is absolutely essential for any meaningful eternal impact on the world from your actions.  Why waste your efforts?  Why exert energy where Holy Spirit is not evidently working? Having the spirit of Christ means initially being saved.  Are you saved?  Have you repented of your sins and placed your faith in Jesus Christ, submitting to His lordship?”

“HAVE the Spirit of Christ – get filled with Holy Spirit”.  That’s entire sanctification.  Without getting sanctified, it is pretty hard to stay close to Jesus, to make a habit of keeping in sight of Him.  So, get entirely sanctified – repent of whatever you have on the side.  Consecrate every single aspect of your life.  Believe that God is omnipotent and good – that what He commands, He enables.  He commands our holiness; He enables it.”

8. “Men possessed of devils were men who dealt with themselves and each other in a devilish way.” (This echos from the song, ‘A Mighty Fortress Is Our God’, “And though this world with devils filled, should threaten to undo us. We will not fear for God has willed his truth to triumph through us”)
You and I might wonder why certain people act certain ways.  A lot of times they act devilishly because they have a demonic influence! This explains why there is so much evil in the world.

But we thank God for the cure, “A man possessed with the spirit of Christ deals with himself and others in a Christ-like way.” (That is wisdom from a man of God!)

So let us be possessed of the Spirit of Christ! Then we will be as Booth describes at the end of the quote we are studying today, “He is a Christ-man.” Of course, ‘man’ implies every person, women and children as well! The Love Of Jesus In You and I Does Not Fail!

9. And finally millions like you and I can testify of what Jesus has done in our lives by ‘following Him’. Jesus first takes us in as followers but then he empowers us to be leaders to win others!
One of the greatest Salvation Army writers who expressed what following Jesus looked like, or what living in holiness felt like, was Samuel Logan Brengle.

In his sanctification testimony at Boston Common he stated this: ‘I walked out over Boston Common before breakfast, weeping for joy and praising God. Oh, how I loved! In that hour I knew Jesus, and I loved Him till it seemed my heart would break with love. I was filled with love for all His creatures. I heard the little sparrows chattering; I loved them. I saw a little worm wriggling across my path; I stepped over it; I didn’t want to hurt any living thing. I loved the dogs, I loved the horses, I loved the little urchins on the street, I loved the strangers who hurried past me, I loved the heathen, I loved the whole world.’

How beautiful is that! Do you have this kind of closeness in your following of Jesus? If not,  you may come forward today and pray to get it through the Holy Spirit. Please pray for the worldwide congress in London this week as well as this celebration will be used as a motive to bring many more souls to Jesus! Follow Him and you will fish men, and women! Go for soul

Real Fathers Love Jesus and Teach their Children the Word!

Real Fathers Love Jesus and Teach their Children the Word!

Kelly Durant    6/11/02  Re 6-29-15 Deuteronomy 11:19

2. In English there is a phrase that appears on bumper stickers, it says, “Real Men Love Jesus”! The truth is a man that does not love Jesus is a man that will not be a good husband or father! Even the men here who come to this church, and who are Christian may be lacking in knowledge on how to be a real father. With no spirituality a man is a brute beast!

Speaking for myself, I grew up without a father, my parents divorced when I was 1 yr. old, so I grew up like many of you, and like 50% of the people in this country, without any an idea of what a father is supposed to be! If you never had a father, I understand you, but we can learn new things because it is a new day and young men can learn what a father should be like.

Women too need to learn how to choose the right men for mates who will be good fathers and they should inspire their man to love the Lord!  I had to learn how to be a father from God’s word and other Christian books on the subject!  I spent hours of study on the matter, and that is what it takes!

3. And I must say I have not a perfect dad for my 5 kids either! I have learned from my mistakes! But the main thing I learned, and if you remember only one thing today I want it to be this verse. It is the most important task of a father… Deu.11: 19 And ye shall teach them (the law, or God’s word) your children, speaking of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.

Having kids does not make a man a father! A real father according to God is one who knows the Bible, one who teaches those precepts to his children, and one who lives by its standards! (Repeat)

My question is, do you fathers here today do that? The Bible talks a lot about the evil character of men in the last days. Basically the sins of the past cultures are the same sins of today but the problem with that is those sins of the fathers, could be placing their souls and the souls of their children in danger of not inheriting salvation.

4. There are men that think it is okay to abandon their wives & children or think it is okay to live as they so desire wasting money on sins disregarding God, being abusive to those in their homes.  But as we can read that Jesus had some harsh words to those that keep kids from the faith and teaching sins to their children by their bad examples!

Matt 18:6 (read) But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea.

He said basically that they would go to hell forever! Jesus states here that suicide for that man or father would be better for him than to mislead a child away from God!

5. The word speaks a lot about how the men should be the spiritual leaders but a leader is not being a macho dictator slave driver that shouts out commands! We are talking about being a leader as Jesus was a leader, a man with a character imitating that of Jesus, having love for his family, wife and children, giving his life for them sacrificing his time, talent, and income.

Christ loved us and gave his life for us, and if we as men are to follow His footsteps then we must also live and obey all of what he taught and teach others the same! There is a culture problem with the world today. People are conditioned to believe that all there is to being a Dad is to bring the money home. They get home late, they watch TV, or they play sports with their friends and rarely if ever, on an intimate level, communicate with their children or wives! If men do not become spiritual such as the Israelite men, or as many Native Americans, and previous generations of Christians were, they are doomed to reap the consequences of criminal carnal activity.

Very few hours in the work week do men (fathers) ever spend time with their children! They don’t play much with them or talk to them, or teach them the Bible, or even discipline them for that matter! The male in today’s world has been emasculated and are as knights without armor.

6. And some children here really know how to manipulate the mother and get away with what they want while the father is off working or in another world and he does not even see how disrespectful, sneaky, and problematic his kids really are!

Children need a father involved in their lives and they need a man to discipline and control, but if they don’t get that correction early from their fathers, they will get it later from the police as they go behind bars!

A child that will not submit to a parent will certainly never submit to God! Don’t think that just because you come to church and believe in God, and think that because you are from a culture that believes in family values that it can’t happen to you! Even good fathers sometimes have to watch their kids become like the prodigal son when he demanded his share of the money and left home.

7. Never say, oh, my son is pain in the rear! Just correct them! The word makes it clear that it is a curse to have the children dominating the parents. Is.3:12 (read) 12 As for my people, children are their oppressors, and women rule over them. O my people, they which lead thee cause thee to err, and destroy the way of thy paths.

Do you realize how many young people have trouble with the law mostly because they do not have a father involved to correct and love them?  Not always is it the parents fault, some children seem to be born tremendous in character, but I do know from observation and experience that children who are left to their own devices will bring their parents to shame.

Prov 29:15 (read) 15 The rod and reproof give wisdom: but a child left to himself bringeth his mother to shame. It says mother there but it also applies to the fathers who share the same home with the mothers! So what is a Christian father? He is a man who sets the example!

8. Do these things here on this list! A father…
1) Loves and lays down his life for his family to meet their spiritual
and physical needs, A man that is failing in being a spiritual leader is truly a failure because his children will grow up ignorant of the word, morality, and sin and will fall into the devil’s vices and traps or rapid destruction!

2) He prays with is family and intimately communicates, he is not proud but he listens to the needs of those in his care

3) He teaches his wife and his children the Word of God. To teach doesn’t mean to only pass along information; it means to teach by living as an example, and to correct with love when it is necessary
One more time we will repeat the verse we started off with, Deu.  11:19

Pray for the men to love Jesus and be real fathers!

Do Everything in Love: Despite the pain!

Do Everything in Love: Despite the pain!          Kelly Durant 2-21-10

1 Cor 16:14
14 Do everything in love.
Not often do I preach with a verse that has only 4 words, but actually this verse says it all? Recall we are continuing with what does love imply that we do? God does everything in love…do you?
Consider one of many situations where there is tough love: A parent takes his child to the clinic to get a shot so he will not catch a disease. The child in confusion feeling the needle go in thinks his parent is treating him mean.
A brother takes his friend to the rehab center even though he will be deathly sick without the drugs or alcohol he has been using. This is love with pain, sometimes as humans we only focus on the pain but do not understand the love behind the pain, right?
Here in the Corps and in all churches, some of you when you are corrected focus only on the pain and your feelings, and you do not understand the love behind it.
Love sometimes includes pain, but if it is God’s love, it comes from the sincere good intentions of the heart and the effect is good fruit & healing! But sometimes as humans fail and do all things “ in love”. 14 Do everything in love. It is extremely hard to do! Can you? Do you? It is sad when we see sometimes some things not done in love and that makes Regina and I, and obviously the Lord, feels pain!
Ist Type of Pain including love: A loving action that initially is painful to the recipient, but the outcome is a positive, life saving action.
So why do we as humans often not understand the pain that seems to accompany love?
You and I chose to love God as children with faith, and we have confirmed in our spirits that God gave Jesus to us in love to save as many souls as would come to Him. Initially we did not understand the pain Jesus had to endure, but accepting Jesus pain, death, and resurrection is like the child getting the immunization shot trusting that despite the pain, the Father taking him to the clinic knows what is best.
Actually, God being pure love, synonymous to holiness, does not include pain in Himself as what He overtly shares. He is a just God that does require justice for evil actions, which implies punishment, which in consequences is pain. I hate pain and you? God felt pain many times. With man’s disobedience from the beginning we see this:
Gen 6:6
The Lord was grieved that he had made man on the earth, and his heart was filled with pain.
We conclude that pain is a product of man’s disobedient actions, or sin and even God gets affected by it!!
2nd Type of Pain: The response to disobedience, a correcting love.
Pain originated from disobedience. Disobedience produced the first pain of shame and sorrow when Adam and Eve were expulsed from the Garden of Eden. The first opening of the eyes was to the fact that they were ashamed to be naked, or no longer in the holiness of God, and the consequence after that was a horrible feeling of fear of God’s presence, knowing He would punish them, then the final effect was death for being contaminated with evil.
Sin brings pain in which ways? Did you see the process which repeats over and over: shame, fear, then death! These are the results of not being in obedience to God’s love! So pain we actually inherited from Adam and Eve but we ourselves keep repeating it, but the healing love we gained from Jesus love! His correcting love breaks our hearts and takes away our shame, fear, and death and replaces it with His holiness, boldness and life!   Jesus is the lamb that takes away the sin and pain and puts us back into obedience and life!

1 Cor 15:21-22
21 For since by man came death, by man (Jesus) came also the resurrection of the dead.
22 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.
What is pain exactly according to the dictionary? Pain:” The condition or fact of suffering or anguish especially mental, as opposed to pleasure; torment; distress; sadness; grief; solicitude; disquietude.
Pain of all sorts comes to all of us in this life, to some younger in their life than others, to some more severe than others, and for some more physical than mental.
But God is love and love heals pain! Pain was not in God’s original plans. God created a heaven on earth, but pain as it turns out is sort of a control mechanism to keep us in state that reminds us we are weak and need Him and His Holy Spirit to bring us comfort! Pain in our body should prevent us from doing destructive things to it! Pain makes us hate the Satan who introduced it to the world!
3rd Type of Pain: A suffering applied to us by evil ones only because we love God.
We are chosen out of this world and this means we are less and less bound to its temptations, suffering and pain and those who have dirty shoes want to step on ours that are clean so they will feel we are no better than them.
In the world we will have pain from the tribulation others will cause us.
John 15:19-20
19 If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you. 2
We who do our best for God and love God are hated, and this causes us to reap pain by unjust acts done to us. We have God’s love, peace, and comfort and this exposes that the people with unrepentant sin have no excuse to not clean up, or to justify their continuing sinful actions.
Christians are hated because they prove one can love God, and be happier serving Him than being in a sinful lifestyle! People sinning in pain hate people who are pain-free!
The world hates the fact that we as Christians do not suffer as they do for their wrongful actions. The people who are marked with shame, fear, and death are jealous of our ability to cope with pain in this life (and we can only by prayer and loving support amongst ourselves).
These unrepentant people would love to see us you and I suffer the torment, anguish, sadness, and grief, for our sins as they have to, but that is not how it works for the Christian. “There is no rest for the wicked!” “But he giveth his beloved rest!”
Have you understood this lesson on love yet? Pain my happen in our lives for love and for our good, a purging, a refining fire, a medicine. Pain may happen due to our reaping of the consequences of our destructive actions. Or pain may be caused by others who do things out of hate, not love.
Pain is what is here due to disobedience, but Jesus takes all the pain away with His Love! Starting right now in this life, and then forever in the life to come! Jesus did everything in love!
Remember Jesus says:
John 14:18
18 I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.

2 Cor 1:3-6
3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, 4 who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God. 5 For just as the sufferings of Christ flow over into our lives, so also through Christ our comfort overflows. 6
God’s love provides for relief from pain right now while we are on earth & hereafter!
So God is not cruel in not abolishing pain completely on earth, He gives happiness and pleasure to those that love Him and are obedient to Him to a great degree so we get a little glimpse of what heaven will be like!

Earth is a school and all people need to be warned of what hell is like, on what pure pain is like, on what disobedience to God brings! The pain s so severe in hell that Jesus says that “there will be wailing and gnashing of teeth!”

But obedience brings love, peace, and joy! And once you are on the holiness path it just gets better and better with God, but it gets worse with people of the world who hate God!

One time I forgot to tell one of my sons when he was about 12 that when he used the lawn mower he needed to check the oil, to make sure that there was enough there. And guess what happened? He used it and it got overheated and burnt up!
It is like God made us like as humans like a piece of machinery that must have God’s oil of the Holy Spirit present at all times. If not we will burn up with all the heat and stress or life! We can die young in life when love is not present! Pain is a stressor that destroys its own machinery! But pain in someone’s life opens the door for us, as Christians, to tell others about Jesus!

The people of the world without love by their own choice would love to see everyone destroyed along with them, and they want no God in the schools, abortion, war, sinful pleasures legitimatized, and they hate the good, the love, and the comfort we possess!

There is always the dialog of the rejecters of Christianity that accuses God of being a sadist to make his Son, Jesus to die, as if God is a cruel Father and therefore unfit to worship because He had a desire to see his Son in pain and be tortured. But His love was cruel!? Have you ever thought about that part? The devil is creative to discredit God’s love and sacrifice that God gave Jesus up with extreme pain! What an insult! Pure pain in Jesus paid for our sins!
Another thing, people predictably try to escape the pain they feel, often a pain produced from the shame of who they are, just another miserable rat in the rat race! Pain is temporarily masked with parties like the publicans had in Jesus day, with alcohol or drugs, illicit sex, and the pursuit of some sensory stimulation. I know what that is like when I was in sin and it is a miserable empty life!

It is like life on a roller coaster, up and down. But when all the friends are gone home, when the music is turned off, and the hangover is present, when pain is present, you are reminded no amount of pleasures satisfy, they only leave you with more pain.

For Christians that repent, however, God brings them out of the pain, the shame, the fear, and the death that would come as a consequence. God only allows pain for a while in our lives, no one, not even His own Son could escape feeling pain because of what others did to Him.

The beautiful part is all pain will be erased! When we go to be the Lord forever pain will no longer exist in that realm and we will remember it no more.
Rev 21:4
4 And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.
So love could appear to have within itself pain in this regard: We feel sad when a loved one is not with us to spend time with. We also will feel sad when we do not spend time with God. People that love others, and God too, will hurt when they are not together and getting attention. But love between Christian people and God heals pain!
Do you feel pain sometimes? Jesus came to free us from mental & physical pain! Remember He healed and still heals bodies and sicknesses; He frees minds enslaved by the demons of depression, loneliness, guilt, and sadness.
Love is the solution! In my life I have seen dozens of people come alive with God’s love and be healed of their life of pain. All I do, and what all of us should be doing, is to love everyone in “everything we do” and pray to know how to be a blessing to love everyone in our lives. I love people despite the many sins I may see in the people. Do you? If you love you will see others like a dying flower come back to life with the water of God’s love in the word and by your love if you share enough of it! Do you do everything in love?
